Recent findings demonstrate that writing by hand improves creative writing and fine motor skills, The hand-writing without tears curriculum, a nationally-acclaimed program used by millions of students world-wide makes handwriting mastery, joyful for students.
This program begins in our Marigold class and uses a developmentally-appropriate and multi-sensory approach to teach the students capital letter formation. Each week, Mat Man, a special guest visits the class and the children build the mat man using the shapes required for letter formation. Using these same shapes, children then begin to build letters.
Letters are taught in a systematic way, starting with the basic lines (such as in the letter L and F), and moving on to more difficult letters.
Each student then practices the new letter using various tools including their chalkboards.
